Environmental
Management Guidance Manual for SME Aggregates Companies
(MIRO Manual)
Introduction
The aggregates industry is facing an increasing need to achieve
and demonstrate high environmental management quality standards.
Changes to minerals planning policy, tightened environmental legislation,
and the increasing influence of stakeholders and their involvement
are urging the aggregate industry to implement more stringent environmental
practices thus increasing environmental performance. The Environmental
Management Guidance Manual for SME Aggregate Companies was developed
to help quarry companies, in particular SMEs, to meet this challenge.
Content
The Manual explains the planning and regulatory context that governs
how quarries operate and describes good practice for achieving ongoing
legislative compliance with environmental controls. The manual also
addresses site restoration and aftercare.
The
Contents of the Manual:
Part
A: Background to Environmental Management of Aggregates Sites
A-1 Introduction
A-2 Environmental Regulation of Aggregates Sites
A-3 Voluntary Environmental Controls
Part
B: Operational Environmental Management Guide
B-1 Environmental Management ‘Topic’ Characters
B-2 Environmental Good Practice in Site Restoration and Aftercare
B-3 Environmental Management Resources
Development
The development of the Manual has been jointly undertaken by NECESI,
University of Durham (Lead Organisation and Project Manager), and
The Environment Practice (Principal Partner). The project has been
funded by the Minerals Industry Research Organisation (MIRO) under
Sustainable Land Won and Marine Dredged Aggregate Mineral Programme
(SAMP) on behalf of the Office of The Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM).

Environmental
Management for Business Success Manual
Introduction
This guide is aimed at companies that wish to develop an environmental
management system (EMS) from scratch. It is designed to assist companies
in achieving certification to BS EN ISO 14001:2004 although it may
also be used by companies for whom certification is not a goal or
for whom a simplified system may be sufficient. The guide also provides
information on the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS)
and highlights the additional requirements of that standard compared
to those of ISO 14001.
Content
The guide is divided into ten sections, stated below along with
a short summary of the contents of each section.
SECTION

An overview of environmental management systems. This section also
includes a summary of the costs and benefits associated with developing
an EMS.
SECTION
